Yusuke Suga Solo Exhibition "Eyes for Wide Shut"
Saturday, March 19, 2022 ‒ Sunday, April 17, 2022
Born in Tokyo in 1984, Yusuke Suga majored in sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts, and produces mainly three-dimensional works using various materials, including computer graphics and photographs. He has continued to show his art both inside and outside Japan. Thus far, his focus has been on placing mutually conflicting elements in the same work, making impact and violence visible, and presenting states that would ordinarily be impossible, in three dimensions. These attributes may be exemplified by his statue of Perseus triumphantly holding his own detached head aloft, prosthetic legs for racehorses, which cannot escape death if they injure their legs, and brightly shining Stealth aircraft. With these and other works, he has cleverly made conditions that preserve both order and chaos appear before our eyes.
Although he has continued to create many three-dimensional works, Suga has also asserted that the fundamental identity of his production does not lie in sculpture. Upon repeated discussion on the question of why he continues to make art, he arrived at a formative experience that could be said to have occasioned his artistic production.
This experience occurred when Suga was four years old. While it may not seem very dramatic to someone else, it was a big development that turned the whole world upside-down as far as he was concerned. The surprise and fear brought by a total change in an everyday life he had believed in and never doubted. The odd feeling accompanying the realization that there definitely also exists a world which was not recognized. Suga says that he continues to make art because he wants to get that feeling once more. Along with a text by the artist, this exhibition will show a new group of works related to the formative experience that sparked his production.
We are looking forward to seeing you at "Eyes for Wide Shut" the solo exhibition by Yusuke Suga at LEESAYA.
