Shusuke Tanaka "Follow the scene"
Shusuke Tanaka Solo Exhibition "Follow the scene"

Saturday, May 21, 2022 ‒ Saturday, June 11, 2022

Born in Wakayama Prefecture in 1986, Shusuke Tanaka graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Osaka University of Arts in 2009. At present, he is based in Osaka and remains in vigorous activity. His major exhibitions so far include the solo exhibition "A lot of other days loaded in today (a Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama, 2020)", "Stepping into the other day for away today (a Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama project held at Nakagawa Gallery, 2020)" and the group exhibitions "Stasis Field 2020 -> 2021 (Tokyo Arts and Space Hongo, 2020)" and "Approaches to Painting – reprise (√K Contemporary, 2021)".

Tanaka takes figurative clippings of everyday scenes that he comes across and strike him, and turns them into paintings. He paints snapshots of extraordinary sights on an extension of the ordinary, with a focus on the experience of surprise, fear, or other emotion he felt when encountering them. For this reason, the paintings may have unstable compositions or deformed shapes, and weird combinations of motifs often appear in them. This results from his faithful reproduction of the instant of the encounter that provoked the emotion. It is particularly noteworthy that Tanaka, who has produced hundreds of paintings, gave each of them a title reflecting the episode that inspired it and what he felt at the time. Reading these titles will surely deepen your appreciation of the paintings.

For Tanaka, who says “I want that scene,” painting is not so much a means of presenting images on some prescribed theme as a way of getting clues for knowledge about inscrutabilities and the world. He does this through the process of taking photos of scenes encountered in everyday life, paying frequent visits to them, and depicting them in order to duplicate the oddness there before his eyes, without any modification.

In this exhibition, Tanaka plans to show works of various sizes, including newly produced ones. Through these paintings, viewers will no doubt naturally become aware of the atmosphere of the contemporary age. Tanaka intends to be present at the gallery on the first day of the exhibition and several days during its run. (We will provide details on our SNS accounts once the schedule has been finalized.) If you visit on one of these days, please feel free to ask the artist himself about the episodes that inspired the paintings.

We are eagerly looking forward to seeing you at the solo exhibition "Follow the scene", Tanaka’s first show at LEESAYA.
