Each Modern is pleased to be participating in ART021 for the first time with an international presentation that includes New York-based photorealism artist Hilo Chen; American artist Egan Frantz; German artist Hell Gette; contemporary Japanese artists Miyajima Tatsuo, Sohei Nishino, Hiraku Suzuki; and young artist Jou LiYan, Xu Jiong.

New York-based photorealism artist Hilo Chen(born in Yilan, Taiwan, 1942) was the youngest member of the Ton Fan Painting Group, the first Chinese art group in abstraction, and studied under Li ChungSheng. In 1968, he traveled to Paris then moved to New York. From his early work to the renowned Beach Series, Hilo Chen’s place in history is adjacent the photorealism master Chuck Close. His works can be found in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, San Jose Museum of Art, and many other renowned contemporary art institutions.

Egan Frantz(born in Norwalk, USA ,1986)’s 2021 painting with absurd words is almost like a manifesto on how painting is beyond language; Munich-based artist Hell Gette(born in Karabulak, Kazakhstan, 1986) utilizes “emoji” to compose surreal, primitive digital landscapes. Meanwhile, we will find Post-Impressionism and Fauvism in Jou LiYan(born in New Taipei City, Taiwan, 1996) ‘s painting of dinosaur fighting and blossoms in still life; Xu Jiong(born in Hangzhou, China) gathers abstract signs, calligraphy, and photo collage to create a unique style of contemporary Chinese ink art.

Miyajima Tatsuo(born in Tokyo, Japan, 1957) is a key artist that coheres Japanese post-war avant-garde art and contemporary art. He has been seen as a post-Mono-ha artist as well as a Tokyo Simulationism artist; Sohei Nishino(b. 1982, Hyogo, Japan) often uses large numbers of photos to collage and form magnificent natural landscapes and urban panoramic views, such as the "Mountain Line ‘Everest’" and "Diorama Map”; in Hiraku Suzuki(b. 1978, Miyagi, Japan)’s works, drawing is seen as a medium between images and language. His highly recognizable abstract aesthetics separates reality from text, inviting audiences to interpret infinitely in the universe he has constructed.
