Each Modern is pleased to present post war artists Hilo Chen and Chen TingShih; Japanese contemporary artists Miyajima Tatsuo, Sohei Nishino, Hiraku Suzuki; American artist Antone Könst; and young Taiwanese artists Jou LiYan and Ling Yung, along with “SOAP” by Chang TingTong and Chen HsienChing curatorial program “SOAP”.

Hilo Chen(born in Yilan, Taiwan, 1942), the youngest member of the “Ton-Fan” Art Group, moved to New York in 1968 and became an important artist working in photorealism. His paintings are as precise as the pictures captured by a camera lens. He uses delicate techniques to create outstanding visual effects. To this day, his works have played a key role in the American art market and in art history; born in Fujian, China, Chen TingShih(1913 - 2002) moved to Taiwan in 1945. He is well-known for his cane fiberboard relief prints and his pioneering practice of abstractions dealing with the sky and the earth, the sun and the moon, and his philosophy towards life. He lived through wars and the February 28 incident, and established the Modern Printmaking Association with other artists such as Chin Sung and was exhibited in the Sao Paulo Art Biennial. Chen is a key figure in modern Chinese art history.

Miyajima Tatsuo(born in Tokyo, Japan, 1957) is a key artist that coheres Japanese post-war avant-garde art and contemporary art. He has been characterized as a post-Mono-ha artist as well as a Tokyo Simulationism artist; Moriyama Daido(b, 1938, Osaka, Japan), the key figure of Japanese contemporary photography, created “bye-bye polaroid,” a final send-off to Polaroid that ceased manufacturing its once-ubiquitous instant film in 2008; Sohei Nishino(b. 1982, Hyogo, Japan) often uses a large number of photos to collage and form magnificent natural landscapes and urban panoramic views, such as the renowned city series "Diorama Map”; in Hiraku Suzuki(b. 1978, Miyagi, Japan)’s works, drawing is seen as a medium between images and language. His highly recognizable abstract aesthetics separates reality from text, inviting audiences to interpret infinitely in the universe he has constructed.

Meanwhile, we find Post-Impressionism and Fauvism in Jou LiYan(born in New Taipei City, Taiwan, 1996)‘s painting of dinosaur fighting and blossoms in still life; meanwhile, Lin Yung(born in Taichung, Taiwan, 1992) paints petals, leaves or bare breasts to rejects the single narratives of feminine beauty.

“SOAP” is an original online exhibition project by Chang TingTong(born in Taipei, Taiwan, 1982), which serves as his response to this pandemic period when physical activities were nonexistent and social activities were only available in digital form. Unlike most online exhibitions that reproduce physical space using the virtual form, Chang directly recreates a fictitious factory that only exists in fake news and never in real life. Using video, he captured every action that took place in the site and then tore down the factory installation. The artist also collaborates with Chen HsienChing(born in Taipei, Taiwan, 1998), a new-generation musician native to internet culture, to use performance, rap and hip pop to translate contemporary art into the language of the internet generation. “SOAP” is sponsored by Dreamin’ MoNTUE.

Each Modern also collaborates with The Balvenie to present works by Japanese photography master Araki Nobuyoshi(born in Tokyo, Japan, 1940), Taiwanese photographic artists Lee Lee YehLin(born in Taipei, Taiwan, 1976), Wu MeiChi(born in Tainan, Taiwan, 1989), and Lu YuanZe(born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, 1998).
